Work Environment



  • Residential electricians operate both outdoors and indoors. Their work may be physically strenuous at times, requiring repeated bending and sometimes the lifting of heavy objects. Electricians are more prone to on-the-job injuries than many other professions because of the dangerous nature of electricity. They also may have a greater risk for falls or cuts. When working outdoors, electricians may often have to deal with inclement weather as well.



    Many electricians have regular 30 to 50 hour work week, even though some residential electricians would need to be on the call 24/7 or whenever a resident needs him. They would be available to the flat or building to fix whatever is the existing problem in the equipment that is faulty or unusable in the dead of the night or on weekends or during the holidays.

    Training

You would usually need to attend classroom lessons and have an apprenticeship with another experienced electrician. Many schools in the States, both private and public would offer you electrician training as it is a highly valued job. As an apprentice, you would work under the experienced electricians, with them supervising you closely and most programs can last at least 4 to 5 years with other a hundred hours of classroom lessons clocked per year and more than two thousand hours on the job itself under apprenticeship.

Instruction on how to read blueprints, electrical safety and treatment of injuries on the job, as well as specialized training in areas such as soldering will all be taught to the aspiring electrician in the classroom.

After they had gone through with apprenticeship, new electricians would have to pass exams administered by each state or country before they can receive the license to practise as an electrician. Most Job Description for Residential Electricians would require you to practise under an experience electrician anyway, so as for you to gain the necessary experience.
  • Salary

    Most companies would pay a regular residential electrician in the US an average rate of $20 per hour. However, as times are tough, many reports that an average rate of $15 per hour are arising but the top 10 percent of residential electricians earn more than $40 per hour.
    Employment in the U.S.

Electricians in the US hold a staggering amount of jobs in the country; more than 700,000. This is incredible as the economy nowadays are doing badly. Most of the residential electricians are working for electrical contracting firms, meaning they are not self employed while less than 10 percent are self-employed.
  • Job Outlook




The Job Outlook for Residential Electricians are very good and there are more and more Job Description for Residential Electricians popping up on the newspaper and internet as the demand grows. It is estimated that the employment of electricians can increase about 10 percent more between 2010 to 2018. The prospects for highly experienced residential electricians would also remain good as they have a wide range of experience in many areas.


There are also more homes and apartments sprawling out of US to keep the demand of the people up, the job prospects for residential electricians are expected to remain buoyant.
