Electrician Job Description: Is being an electrician really right for you?

If you are deciding on becoming an electrician, you would first need to read up on an electrician job description.

Once you understand and comprehend what the job description is talking about, you can then decide whether it is the right job for you and whether you want to be an electrician.

Let's face it. Electricity is an integral part to our life these days, comparable to food and sleep. We would be hard pressed to find if we do not have our electronics like the iPhone or iPods with us.

And that is why electricians are one of the jobs that are highly in demand; electricity is needed to keep the world going.

Electricians Main Duties

The most common thing that an electrician would do is to install wirings around the house or building, connect them to outlets and switches around the area, test for connectivity; whether do they work properly, and maintain the electrical systems if they are faulty. climate control, security systems, and communications are just some of the common areas. However, depending on the environment of your work, there might be more.

Electricians will specialize in either maintaining the existing wirings and switches or construction of new wirings. However, more electricians now choose to do both to satisfy the demand and even more electrician job descriptions require the electrician to be skilled at both.

Electricians must work with complicated blueprints whenever and wherever they are installing electrical systems in buildings like:

  • factories, especially large scale ones
  • commercial buildings
  • private homes
  • small businesses
  • multi-family dwellings
and any other buildings where electricity is needed.

Blueprints would tell the electrician how the wiring is to be installed, where to lead the lines and where to put the outlets.
The places where light fixtures, switches, outlets and even pieces of equipment would need to be noted and taken into consideration by the electrician and be properly assembled and installed.
That is why having blueprints around is so important. The electricity must be available where the owner require electrical power.
Some areas may need a 220 watt outlet, like for a stove. Other areas just need the regular 110 watt outlet. Some countries also possess different voltage requirements and different shapes of the switches. A smart electrician would need to take note of these and implement their plugs and wirings correctly to avoid any mishaps.

Light and Heavy Industry

The various industrial buildings in America have needs that vary between each one of them; depending mostly on the type of equipment that they utilise, like the step-up or step-down transformers and fuse boxes.

In most factories and commercial buildings, there would be conduits in partitions, in walls or other areas where employees would not be able to see. There are also lighting panels, small boxes made mostly out of plastic, fastened to the walls to house the electrical outlets and switches for  consolidated and easy adjustments of the flow of electricity.

Electricians would also need to take note of the wires that are pulled in the conduit and connected in the boxes for them to complete the full circuit. In most electrician job descriptions, it would be best to take note of the lighter electrical uses like in residential buildings. In residential buildings, they mostly use plastic covered wire like unshielded power cables rather than heavy duties conduits.

Electricians are needed to connect the wires to electrical components in the buildings like the circuit breakers, transformers and other components. The wires can be joined together in the box with items like terminals, connectors and lugs that are available to the electrician.
